Regional History

Australian history … is so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer … It is full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities; but they are all true, they all happened.
Mark Twain, 'Following the Equator' (1897).

Goulburn Regional History Room

Materials relating to the history of Goulburn and the Southern Tablelands region are collected and made available for research within the Regional History Room (RHR) of Goulburn Library. These resources are provided jointly by the Goulburn District Family History Society Inc (G.D.F.H.S) and the Southern Tablelands Regional Library. STRL also provides access to regional history services and resources through all its branch libraries.

Goulburn Library is also a Community Access Point for State Records NSW

The RHR collections include:

  • State Records Archives Resources Kit incorporating NSW births, deaths & marriages, convict and transportation records, and shipping and immigration lists etc
  • Local newspapers on microfilm from 1848
  • Comprehensive indexes and guides, eg obituaries
  • Books, pamphlets, maps and plans, microfiche and microfilm
  • Photographs (limited access by arrangement)

The Local and Family History Internet Assistant (PDF) contains links for a wide variety of family and local history related sites, many of them are specific to the Southern Tablelands region. There are also other useful links for Australia and overseas, including links for adoption, armed services, cemeteries, and court reports, as well as photographs and pictures.

Miles Franklin's Goulburn - a self guided walking tour
This walking tour commemorates Miles' years in the Goulburn district. It features many of the sites mentioned in relation to Miles, identifies places quoted in her books, and highlights others that she would have recognised in her numerous trips to the city. Maps can be collected from Goulburn Library and the Visitor Information Centre in Sloane St Goulburn
